Save safety

Save System & Autosave Guide

Village in the Shade uses automatic checkpoints rather than a normal free-form manual save. This guide explains what the active save, checkpoints, Ver.1.09 historical snapshots and Clear Data record each mean.

Quick answer

Morning wake is the normal checkpoint. Ver.1.09 keeps up to five previous save states for eligible saves. Those five states are not five days, and Midnight can add a mode-dependent checkpoint.

Use the save-data selection screen when you need to choose an earlier state. Exact history ordering and post-load branching behavior are not confirmed.

Quick reference

Four records, four different jobs

Do not use historical rewind, ordinary autosave and Clear Data as interchangeable terms.

active save

Active save

The save state you continue when you choose the current save data.

automatic checkpoint

Automatic checkpoint

A normal progression checkpoint created by the game at a documented wake or prompt boundary.

historical snapshot

Historical snapshot

One of up to five previous save states retained by Ver.1.09 for eligible saves.

clear data

Clear Data record

A post-ending continuation record. It is separate from the five historical snapshots.

Checkpoint triggers

When an automatic save can matter

The safest public wording is tied to the wake or prompt boundary, with Midnight kept mode-aware.

Shade + Sunshine

Morning wake

The next day begins

Treat this as the normal daily checkpoint boundary.

Shade

Midnight wake

Midnight wake is available and the relevant condition is met

This is mode- and condition-dependent. It is not a promise that every night creates a second checkpoint.

Shade + Sunshine

Clear Data prompt

The ending sequence offers the Clear Data choice

This records story continuation and is not an ordinary autosave snapshot.

Do not overread sleep wording: the reliable guide-level rule is the next documented wake/checkpoint boundary. This page does not invent a separate save button, exact sleep animation rule or universal every-night Midnight save.

Ver.1.09 history

Five previous save states

The current patch baseline retains 5 previous save states per save data. Only saves created after applying Ver.1.09 are eligible. This is a history feature attached to eligible save data, not a claim about the number of top-level save slots.

Current equivalent patch availability is documented for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Steam and Windows.

Five saves is not five days

A retained state is a point in the save history. Because a qualifying Midnight wake can add a checkpoint, five retained states do not guarantee five full calendar days of rewind.

Using history

Loading a previous save

The confirmed public action is selection, not a detailed promise about the history UI.

1

Open save selection

Use the save-data selection screen provided by the game.

2

Choose a previous state

Select the historical save you want to inspect. This page does not invent button labels or a fixed ordering.

3

Continue carefully

The exact behavior of newer snapshots, branching and overwrite after loading an old state remains unresolved. Treat a chosen state as the state you are continuing.

Mode boundary

Midnight and Village in the Sunshine

The two modes should not be flattened into one save-timing promise.

Village in the Shade

Morning wake is the normal checkpoint. Midnight wake may create another checkpoint when the relevant Midnight route and conditions are active. That makes history distance depend on both calendar progress and mode-aware story progression.

Village in the Sunshine

Sunshine keeps the normal save model, but this page does not inherit Shade-only Midnight behavior into the safe mode. Check the Village in the Sunshine guide for mode-specific scope.

Ending safety

Clear Data is a separate decision

Historical snapshots and post-ending continuation solve different problems.

At the ending

After the final sequence, the game can offer a Clear Data choice. Saving that record lets the village continue after the ending. Declining returns you to that morning, so you can retry the final boss sequence or choose the other documented ending path.

Missables are a separate guide

Use Missables for permanent choices, seasonal recovery and completion-impact boundaries. This page only explains the save mechanics that make recovery planning possible.

Common mistakes

Save safely without false certainty

Do not call five snapshots five days

Midnight can add a checkpoint, and the retained count is a history count rather than a calendar unit.

Do not assume a manual save

There is no confirmed free-form save action for ordinary play. Finish important work before the next checkpoint boundary.

Do not treat history as cloud backup

This guide makes no claims about cloud sync, file copying, cross-device transfer or platform backup behavior.

Do not invent old-save branching

The current evidence does not establish whether newer snapshots remain, branch or get overwritten after loading an earlier state.

FAQ

Save and autosave questions

Can I manually save anywhere?

No. The current documented model does not support a normal free-form manual save. Plan around automatic checkpoints instead.

How many previous saves does Ver.1.09 retain?

Ver.1.09 retains five previous save states per eligible save data. Only saves created after applying Ver.1.09 are eligible.

Are the five previous saves five in-game days?

No. They are save states, not a calendar-day guarantee. A Midnight wake can create an additional checkpoint, so the time distance can be smaller.

When does the game autosave?

Morning wake is the normal cross-mode checkpoint. Midnight wake can also create a checkpoint when its mode and story conditions apply; it is not an every-night guarantee.

Does Village in the Sunshine get the same Midnight checkpoint?

Do not assume so. The current public model gives Midnight-specific behavior to Shade conditions and does not inherit it into Village in the Sunshine.

What happens if I load a previous save?

Choose a previous save from the save-data selection screen. The exact ordering, newer-snapshot retention, branching and overwrite behavior are not verified, so this page does not promise any of them.

Is Clear Data the same as loading a previous save?

No. Clear Data is a separate post-ending continuation record. Declining the prompt returns you to that morning so you can retry the final sequence.
