Village in the Shade Tengu Guide

Tengu (天狗) is a Midnight collection anomaly. Buy the matching candle from the red or blue seller, then search the village for color-linked glowing pickups, materials and random blueprints.

The goal is collection and survival. There is no documented conventional combat clear for Tengu.

English item and anomaly names currently follow the site’s Japanese-release terminology and may be updated after the official English localization can be verified on October 27, 2026.

Short Answer

Buy a candle, then search by color

Tengu becomes much clearer when the seller, candle and pickup color are treated as one route.

Seller Locations

Find the two candle sellers

One location is specific; the other remains a village-wide search until a reliable precise pin is available.

赤天狗 · Red Tengu

In front of Rokkaku Restaurant

茶碗亭の前

Speak with the red seller to purchase the Red Candle (赤い蝋燭) for ¥500.

青天狗 · Blue Tengu

Somewhere in the village

村内

The village-wide location is confirmed, but current reliable data does not publish an exact building, road or map pin. Speak with the blue seller to purchase the Blue Candle (青い蝋燭) for ¥500.

Both sellers are tied to the Tengu route. The exact trigger timing, candle purchase limit, candle duration and whether a candle can be reused are not established here.

Step-by-Step Route

How to run a Tengu search

Keep Midnight active and let the candle—not the normal Flashlight—define what you can see.

1

Enter Midnight

Start from the Midnight exploration system; Tengu is a night-only route.

2

Find a seller

Use the confirmed Rokkaku Restaurant frontage for Red Tengu; search the village for Blue Tengu.

3

Buy the match

Red Candle is for the red route; Blue Candle is for the blue route. Each costs ¥500.

4

Search glowing points

Carry the candle through the village and collect the color-linked pickups and any blueprint that appears.

Candle States

What changes with each candle?

The documented distinction is color visibility and pursuer color, not a stat or difficulty comparison.

No candle

The white state uses white pursuers and does not reveal the red- or blue-linked pickup layer.

赤い蝋燭

Red Candle

The red state uses red pursuers and reveals the matching color-linked glowing pickups. Price: ¥500.

青い蝋燭

Blue Candle

The blue state uses blue pursuers and reveals the matching color-linked glowing pickups. Price: ¥500.

Flashlight warning: the normal Flashlight may turn on briefly and then go out during Tengu. That is a special-search restriction; it does not change the general tool data.

These links preserve the canonical 55-book dataset rather than inventing a new numbering system.

Ghost Shelf Context

The Tengu Wooden Plaque is a separate setup path

Do not confuse the plaque relationship with the candle search itself.

天狗の木札

Tengu Wooden Plaque

The plaque is associated with Tengu on the Ghost Shelf and can be found through Midnight glowing pickups. Current data does not establish that it is mandatory for every Tengu appearance or that it overrides the Summer-onward season.

Purifying Salt

Purifying Salt (清めの塩) placed on the Ghost Shelf suppresses documented paranormal or anomaly encounters. Use the broader Night Furniture guide for the exact scope boundary.

Troubleshooting

Why did the search stall?

Midnight is not active yet.
You bought the wrong color candle for the pickup layer you want.
You expected the normal Flashlight to remain on.
You treated the Blue Tengu village location as a confirmed map pin.
You expected every search point to produce a blueprint.
You assumed the four known masks are the complete random pool.
You assumed candle duration, reuse or purchase limits that current data does not establish.
You started too late to search comfortably before the Midnight return cutoff.
Purifying Salt is on the Ghost Shelf and suppressing anomaly activity.

FAQ

Tengu questions

What is Tengu in Village in the Shade?

Tengu (天狗) is a Midnight collection and exploration anomaly. Its documented purpose is finding special color-linked materials and random blueprints, not clearing a conventional combat encounter.

When can Tengu appear?

Current data places Tengu from Summer onward, during Midnight exploration. It is not documented as a Summer-only event.

Where is Red Tengu?

Red Tengu (赤天狗) is documented in front of Rokkaku Restaurant (茶碗亭).

Where is Blue Tengu?

Blue Tengu (青天狗) is confirmed somewhere in the village, but a reliable precise location is not currently published.

How much do the candles cost?

Red Candle (赤い蝋燭) and Blue Candle (青い蝋燭) are each documented at ¥500 from their matching seller.

What does each candle reveal?

No candle produces the white state; Red Candle reveals red-linked pickups and Blue Candle reveals blue-linked pickups. The matching color also changes the pursuer’s color state.

Does the Flashlight work during Tengu?

The normal Flashlight may briefly light and then go out during this special search, so it is unreliable for finding the candle-linked pickups.

What rewards can Tengu provide?

The verified Tengu Night Furniture set is four hanging masks, obtained as random blueprints from candle-lit village search points. The complete pool and exact odds are not published.
