During Midnight, use the Pickaxe on stones in your garden. If one suddenly grows legs and runs away, that is the Stone Ghost (石のお化け). Chase it and keep striking it with the Pickaxe to receive stone-type drops and potentially the Shell Fossil.

Why isn't the Stone Ghost event working?
A rock grew legs and ran away
That is the Stone Ghost. Chase it and continue striking it with the Pickaxe; do not treat the animation as a bug or as an ordinary stone disappearing.
I hit stones but none ran
Check that you are in Midnight and in the player's garden. The current source does not establish a guaranteed spawn, exact attempt count or a special visual clue.
My Pickaxe does not seem to finish it
Do not switch to the Bow, Sickle or Hoe, and do not infer a normal HP system. Keep following the running stone and continue the documented Pickaxe interaction.
I received ordinary stone materials
Stone-type materials are documented drops. Shell Fossil is a possible special Night Furniture reward, not a guaranteed result from every hit.
I did not get Shell Fossil
The current evidence does not establish a guarantee or drop rate. Repeatability and the post-fossil state are also unresolved, so this page does not promise a farming loop.
