These are practical requirements, kept spoiler-light.

  • Copper Pickaxe: used in Kisuke's Helping Ticket route to clear the mountain rockslide.

  • Gold Axe: required for a later Sacred Treasure / Rule VII route.
  • Flashlight: introduced during the first scripted midnight story sequence.

Equipment Boundary

Tools Are Not Machines or Materials

The eight primary records are handheld tools only.

Magatama, fertilizer, scarecrows, sprinklers, traps, bait, licenses, molds, the Workbench, Furnace, Anvil and processing machines belong to other systems. They can support tool progression without inflating the main tool count.

Common Confusion

Tools vs Shrine Skills

A metal tool upgrade and a Shrine skill can affect the same activity without being the same system.

Hoe upgrade

Expands the tilled area from 1 tile up to 5×5 at Meteor Iron.

畝の技術

A Shrine skill that lets an already tilled field tile become a ridge. It is not a Hoe tier.

Sickle skills

カマの技術 reduces stamina use; カマの強化 enables crop harvesting. Neither creates Copper or Steel Sickle tiers.

Progression Advice

Why a Tool May Not Work Yet

Use the relevant system guide rather than assuming every obstacle is a damage or hit-count problem.

Rock or ore

Check Pickaxe tier and Quarry progression.

Mining Guide

Wooden obstacle

A later story route may need the Gold Axe.

Walkthrough

Paddy field

Use the Plow from Tobari's Helping Ticket.

FAQ

Tool Questions

How many main tools are there?

This guide tracks eight main handheld tools: Watering Can, Hoe, Axe, Pickaxe, Plow, Sickle, Bow and Flashlight.

Which tools can be upgraded?

Watering Can, Hoe, Axe, Pickaxe and Plow follow the main metal upgrade path through Copper, Steel, Gold and Meteor Iron.

Can you upgrade the Sickle?

The Sickle does not currently use the standard Copper-to-Meteor-Iron tool chain. Instead, Shrine skills improve Sickle stamina use and later allow it to harvest crops.

How do you get the Bow?

Complete Sumire's Helping Ticket progression and visit her house during the follow-up event to receive the Bow.

How do you get the Plow?

The Plow is obtained through Tobari's Helping Ticket progression and is used to create paddy fields.

Where do you get the Flashlight?

The Flashlight is introduced during the Spring 14 story sequence connected to the game's first scripted midnight exploration.

Where do you get the Sickle?

The Sickle is sold at the General Store for ¥500.

What tool should I upgrade first?

Pickaxe, Axe and Watering Can are the usual early priorities, but the right choice depends on whether mining, construction or crop watering is your biggest bottleneck. See the Tool Upgrade Guide for the full comparison.

Do I need a Gold Axe for the story?

Yes. A later main-story route requires a Gold-upgraded Axe.

Does a better Hoe create larger fields?

Yes. The documented field area increases from one tile at the base tier to 2×2, 3×3, 4×4 and finally 5×5 at Meteor Iron.

Does the Plow upgrade the same way?

Yes. The Plow follows the same 1-tile, 2×2, 3×3, 4×4 and 5×5 area progression for creating paddy fields.

How far does the Watering Can reach?

The documented watering reach increases from 1 tile at the base tier to 2, 3, 4 and 5 tiles through Copper, Steel, Gold and Meteor Iron.
