Village in the Shade Crafting Guide

Crafting in Village in the Shade is one of the main ways your farm expands beyond basic crops and tools.

By collecting wood, stone, ore and other materials, you can craft furniture, farm equipment and processing machines that turn raw ingredients into products such as Beer, Miso, Cheese, Fertilizer, Ingots, Honey and dried foods.

This page is built as a crafting, machines and processing unlock hub rather than a generic furniture tutorial, because the real player problems are recipe sources, missing unlocks, wrong processors and wasted materials.

Last verified: August 10, 2026. Machine names are translated from currently released Japanese-language data where official English localization is not yet available. Unlock requirements, processing times and machine capacities are updated only when supported by released-game sources or direct player testing.

Troubleshooting

A Missing Machine Is Not Always a Missing Material

Use this checklist when the recipe appears in a guide but not in your Workbench or machine menu.

  • If a machine is listed but cannot be built, check the Shrine skill tree, story progression and villager requests before farming more ore.
  • Machine Parts are a nighttime collection objective in current released-game reports; do not assume every missing machine is waiting in the Mine.
  • If Soybeans are in your inventory but Miso is unavailable, check the dedicated Miso route and make sure you are using the processor that handles Soybeans.
  • Colored fragments and mask recipes are useful research leads from player reports, but exact materials should not be presented as confirmed until independently tested.

Unlock Source

Recipes Do Not All Come From the Same System

One of the easiest mistakes is assuming every machine will eventually appear automatically at the Workbench.

Shrine

The Shrine skill tree is one of the main machine unlock systems and currently includes the Mill, Charcoal Kiln, Composter, Sprinklers, Oil Press, Aging Barrel and Brewing Barrel.

Villagers and Requests

Some processors are not Shrine recipes. Current guide data ties the Pickling Barrel to Chinana's help progression and the Bee Box to Yuta-related progression.

Story

Some later machines and facilities still rely on broader story progress, so materials alone do not guarantee that every recipe will appear in the menu.

Core Machines

Which Machines Matter First?

The early and mid-game machine priorities are mostly about efficiency, value conversion and unlocking downstream systems.

Mill

The Mill processes dry crop and mineral ingredients such as Wheat, Sugarcane, Rock Salt, Buckwheat and Soybeans into cooking or processing materials.

Brewing Barrel

One of the strongest money and processing machines. It turns crops and fruit into Beer, Sake, Shochu and broth-style products.

Pickling Barrel

A flexible early-to-mid-game processor for pickles, jam, Fish Sauce, Yogurt and Natto, currently tied to Chinana's help progression.

Milk Processor

Handles Cream, Cheese and Tofu branches, making it one of the most important cross-system machines for livestock and soybean processing.

Charcoal Kiln

Converts Wood into Charcoal and supports Furnace fuel, crafting progression and certain later material chains.

Composter

Turns organic inputs into Fertilizer and is especially useful once crop quality and evaluation planning become a priority.

Advanced Machines

Later Processors Matter More Once You Can Keep Them Busy

Specialized machines become strongest when your farming, livestock, mining and storage systems already generate enough raw material.

Oil Press

Used for Soy Sauce, oils and dyes. It becomes much more valuable once cooking, decoration and spare flower inputs start overlapping.

Aging Barrel

Processes Soybeans into Miso and Meat into Aged Meat. If you have Soybeans but cannot make Miso, this is the machine you are probably missing.

Dryer and Smoker

Useful for preserving and upgrading lower-value inputs into more flexible cooked or saleable goods over multi-day processing windows.

Loom and Silkworm Box

These machines form a textile chain rather than a single output, turning Mulberry Leaves into Raw Silk and then fabric-related products.

Economy

Which Machines Can Add the Most Economic Value?

This page owns machine roles and processing mechanics, while the money page owns full route comparisons and rankings.

Brewing Barrel

One of the strongest practical crop-value machines thanks to routes such as Wheat, Hops and Sweet Potato.

Bee Box

Flowers can become a meaningful value route, but the exact best-flower math still needs careful player-calculated labeling.

Loom

Wool, Cashmere and silk chains can add major value once your material supply becomes stable.

Oil Press and Aging Barrel

Soybeans, Sesame and Olive all become more economically interesting once you have the relevant later processors.

Furnace and Fuel

The Furnace Works Only if the Whole Loop Exists

Raw ore alone is not enough. The Furnace, Charcoal Kiln and mining route all depend on each other.

  • The Furnace processes Copper, Iron, Gold and Meteor Iron into ingots, and also handles Glass and Bricks.
  • Current guide data says it requires Coal or Charcoal as fuel.
  • If the Furnace seems broken, check fuel first, then the ore type, then whether it is already processing.
  • The Charcoal Kiln and Furnace form one of the most important early utility loops.

Sprinklers

Crafting Can Remove One of the Biggest Daily Bottlenecks

Sprinklers are some of the best utility unlocks because they convert crafted resources into time and stamina savings.

  • Small Sprinkler currently covers one tile around itself.
  • Standard Sprinkler currently covers two tiles around itself.
  • Improved Sprinkler currently covers three tiles around itself after later Shrine progression.
  • Do not necessarily spam low-tier Sprinklers if a stronger version is close to unlocking.

Processing Chains

Think in Chains, Not in Single Machines

The strongest crafting routes come from understanding how one input can branch into several completely different outputs.

Soybeans

  • Mill to Kinako
  • Pickling Barrel to Natto
  • Milk Processor to Tofu
  • Oil Press to Soy Sauce
  • Aging Barrel to Miso

Goat Milk

  • Milk Processor to Cheese
  • Later cooking or smoking uses

Flowers

  • Bee Box to Honey
  • Bee Box again to Royal Jelly
  • Oil Press plus hunting materials to Dye

Ore

  • Furnace to Ingots
  • Ingots to better tools and machines

Processing Times

How Long Do Machines Take?

Timers are useful planning estimates, not guarantees that every input behaves identically.

MachineApproximate processing time
MillAbout 1 day
Brewing BarrelAbout 2 to 3 days
Sap CollectorAbout 3 days between collection
Charcoal KilnAbout 30 minutes
LoomAbout 1 day
ComposterAbout 1 to 2 days
Aging BarrelAbout 3 days
Silkworm BoxAbout 2 days
DryerAbout 2 to 3 days
FurnaceAbout 12 hours
Bee BoxAbout 1 to 3 days depending on input

Goal-Based Priorities

Build for the Bottleneck You Actually Have

Players often overcraft low-tier machines when a smaller, more targeted upgrade would solve the real problem faster.

Need more money?

  • Brewing Barrel
  • Pickling Barrel
  • Bee Box
  • Dryer

Need better crops?

  • Composter
  • Sprinklers

Need better tools?

  • Charcoal Kiln
  • Furnace

Need better cooking?

  • Mill
  • Milk Processor
  • Oil Press
  • Aging Barrel

Need better livestock processing?

  • Milk Processor
  • Mayonnaise Processor
  • Loom
  • Smoker

Common Mistakes

Why a Machine Can Be Missing Even When You Have the Materials

Missing recipes are often caused by unlock source, Shrine state or wrong assumptions about where a machine comes from.

  • Assuming every recipe comes from the Shrine.
  • Opening a Shrine tier but forgetting to buy the node with Magatama.
  • Selling all your ore before tool and machine upgrades.
  • Selling all your wood and then starving the Charcoal Kiln or furniture crafting.
  • Ignoring the Charcoal Kiln while expecting the Furnace to stay productive.
  • Putting Soybeans into the wrong machine.
  • Building too many low-tier machines before checking improved versions.
  • Crafting machines you cannot keep supplied with inputs.
  • Ignoring processing time when choosing which machine to prioritize.
  • Treating crafting as separate from farming, mining, livestock and money routes.

Best Progression

A Practical Crafting Order

This is a useful priority path for most players, but not a claim that the game forces one exact sequence.

  • Basic tools and storage
  • Mill
  • Charcoal Kiln
  • Furnace
  • Small Sprinkler
  • Pickling Barrel
  • Composter
  • Brewing Barrel
  • Milk Processor and livestock processors
  • Oil Press
  • Aging Barrel
  • Dryer and Smoker
  • Standard Sprinkler
  • Advanced processors
  • Improved Sprinkler

Checklist

Crafting Checklist

A short checklist helps more than another big paragraph when the real problem is usually one missing unlock or one wrong assumption.

FAQ

Crafting FAQ

Short answers for unlocks, Magatama, machines, Soybean processing, fuel and missing recipes.

Crafting expands through normal progression, and new recipes come from the story, Shrine skill tree, villagers, requests and shops.

Progress the story, repair the roadside Shrine, collect Magatama and purchase machine skill nodes. Some machines instead unlock through villagers or requests.

Magatama is used to unlock abilities and crafting recipes in the Shrine skill tree.

Current GameCap data says its recipe comes from progressing Chinana's help request.

Put five pieces of Wood into the Charcoal Kiln. Current GameCap data gives an approximate processing time of 30 minutes.

Use the Composter. Different organic inputs can affect Fertilizer quality.

Put Soybeans into the Milk Processor.

Process Goat Milk in the Milk Processor.

Process Soybeans in the Aging Barrel.

Process Hops using the Brewing Barrel.

Process Soybeans in the Oil Press.

Process Soybeans in the Pickling Barrel.

Process Soybeans in the Mill.

Use the Furnace with the correct raw ore and Coal or Charcoal as fuel.

The recipe may still be locked behind the Shrine, a villager request, friendship or story progression. Materials alone do not unlock recipes.
